It took me weeks before publishing this review, I know! But before we jump into Hawkeye next week, let’s go back to the world of What If…?

The final episode is titled What If The Watcher Broke His Oath? I knew from the start that there will be a team-up episode featuring our Multiverse heroes so I was really excited for this!

This review contains spoilers so please tread lightly or watch the show first.

What If…? Episode Eight: What If The Watcher Broke His Oath?

Quick Recap 📝

With the risk of Ultron destroying the Multiverse, The Watcher breaks his oath by intervening with the events. The Watcher travels to different timelines and recruits the heroes Captain Carter, Star-Lord T’Challa, Strange Supreme, Killmonger Black Panther, “Party” Thor, and a variant of Gamora who killed Thanos.

Together the heroes form the Guardians of The Multiverse and fight Ultron to save the Multiverse. Ultron summons the Zombies, including the Zombie Scarlet Witch to fight against the Guardians. Meanwhile, Natasha Romanoff shoots Ultron with an arrow containing Arnim Zola’s mind. As Zola overtakes Ultron’s body, Killmonger fights him for the Infinity Stones.

Strange and The Watcher seal Ultron inside a pocket dimension that Strange agrees to watch over. The Watcher returns the heroes in their respective universes, except for Romanoff, whom he delivered back to the timeline where the Avengers were assassinated.

Episode Thoughts 🧠

I’d probably sound like an old broken record because I keep repeating myself, but the episodes are really fast-paced! I really wish there was more but to be fair, I really enjoyed this finale.

Seeing the Guardians of the Multiverse teaming up was really fun! Who would’ve thought these people made a great team? Although, Killmonger was still being in his sneaky self.

One of my favorite scenes would probably be the Captain Carter Universe. It was a fun easter egg for Captain America The Winter Soldier. Captain Carter and Natasha Romanoff’s team-up during the Lemurian Star attack paralleled the first action sequence of Winter Soldier. And you know how much I loved that movie, right? Also, the mid credits scene!!! I wonder if it’s actually Steve who’s inside the Stomper? I’m sure that will be tackled in Season 2!

Overall, I really enjoyed What If. It was a fun experimental phase for me as a Marvel fun because I can just watch these episodes without worrying anything about the continuity of the main timeline.

Since it’s the finale, I figured I’d also share my ranking for the episodes. I’m ranking them from 1-9, with 1 being the best based on my preference.

  1. What If T’Challa Became Star-Lord?
  2. What If Zombies?
  3. What If Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?
  4. What If Doctor Strange Lost His Heart instead of His Hands?
  5. What If Ultron Won?
  6. What If The Watcher Broke His Oath?
  7. What If Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?
  8. What If The Earth Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?
  9. What If Thor Were an Only Child?

The Star-Lord T’Challa episode really amazed me and I’m definitely going to miss Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa. I’m glad that this series quite served as a great send off to him. Also, it was recently announced that Marvel is developing a standalone Marvel Zombies series! I started reading the Zombies comics last September but I haven’t found the time to continue it. I hope I’ll be able to finish it before the series.

  1. I think I’ve said this before, but I definitely agree on the pacing and the shortness of the episodes. In the beginning, I was annoyed with so many of the open endings, but it actually came together really nicely in the final episode. I’m curious if they’ll actually follow the characters we’ve gotten to know this season or if they’ll add new/different versions next season.
Great review and I like your ranking! We’re really similar on that haha

    1. I would definitely love to see a follow-up on that mid-credits scene and see Captain Carter reunite with Steve in that timeline. I’m really curious as to how they’ll set up Season 2 especially after the events of the Finale since The Watcher had intervened.
